Some homeowners actually try to sell their own home for a period of time. The truth is that only about ten percent of owners successfully sell their home on their own. That varies by region and the number goes up a tad for professional real estate investors because they are more familiar with real estate than your average homeowner.
Those that do sell their home successfully usually accept not only a lower price, but they net less than if they had sold it with a professional qualified real estate agent helping them - especially in an uncertain market with high inventory like today.
As everyone who has taken a business course knows, the more demand for a product, the higher the price. The less demand, the lower the price.

As of Sept. 1, 2008, it will take 11.2 months to sell all the existing homes currently available on the market at the current sales pace. This is almost 175,000 more homes on the market than the previous month.

Sellers are eager to know what a prospective buyer likes and doesn't like about their home, and most indicated that they had difficulty getting feedback from buyers. Buyers don't want to hurt the sellers' feelings, so they tend to hold back the true reason(s) why the home did not suit them. The problem may be easily remedied if the seller is informed about it, but otherwise it could result in a lost sale.
